Vine Weevil: How to Protect Pot Plants

Quick answer
Notched leaves above and grubs eating roots below. Vine weevil is a common container plant pest.
Adult vine weevils nibble notches in leaf edges. The real damage comes from their creamy white grubs, which eat roots.
Plants in pots are especially vulnerable.
1 Signs
- โIrregular notches on leaf edges
- โPlants wilting despite moist compost
- โC-shaped white grubs with brown heads in compost
- โPlants that lift easily because roots are gone
2 Control
Nematodes watered into compost in late summer and spring are an effective biological control. Pick off adults at night by torchlight.
3 Repotting
If grubs are found, remove old compost, wash roots, and repot in fresh compost.
4 Prevention
Check new plants and keep pots tidy. Grit on compost surfaces may deter egg laying.
5 Plants most at risk
Container-grown plants such as fuchsias, primulas, heucheras, begonias, and strawberries are particularly vulnerable to vine weevil grubs. Plants in the ground suffer less because natural predators are present. Rhododendrons and yew often show adult notching on leaves. Check susceptible plants by tipping them out of pots in autumn.
This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
