Thrips on Houseplants: Signs and Treatment

Quick answer
Silvery streaks and tiny black specks on leaves often mean thrips. They are stubborn, but manageable.
Thrips are tiny, slender insects that scrape at leaf surfaces and suck the contents. They are barely visible to the naked eye, so damage is often noticed first.
Because they move between plants and hide in soil during part of their life cycle, treatment needs patience.
1 How to spot thrips
- โSilvery or bronze streaks and patches on leaves
- โTiny black dots (droppings) on leaf surfaces
- โDistorted new growth or flower buds
- โThin, fast-moving insects when you tap a leaf over white paper
2 Treatment
Isolate affected plants. Rinse leaves thoroughly in the shower, then spray with insecticidal soap or neem-based products, covering both sides of every leaf. Repeat every 5โ7 days for several weeks. Yellow or blue sticky traps help catch adults and show whether numbers are falling.
3 Biological control
Predatory mites, available from specialist suppliers, eat thrips larvae and work well in greenhouses and on houseplants. They are safe for people and pets.
4 Preventing a return
Inspect new plants and cut flowers before bringing them home, and quarantine new plants for a couple of weeks. Raising humidity can deter thrips, which prefer dry conditions.
This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
