Snake Plant Care: How to Keep a Sansevieria Happy

Quick answer

The famously tough houseplant has one real weakness, and most people kill it with kindness.

Snake plants (now classified as Dracaena trifasciata, though the old name sticks) are some of the most forgiving houseplants available. They tolerate low light, dry air, and long periods of neglect.

What they do not tolerate is wet roots.

1 Light

They survive in dim corners but grow faster and keep stronger colour in bright, indirect light. A few hours of direct morning or evening sun is fine. Variegated forms need more light to keep their markings.

2 Watering

Let the compost dry out completely between waterings. In a warm, bright room in summer, that may be every two to three weeks; in winter, once a month or less. When you do water, water thoroughly and let it drain โ€” never leave the pot standing in water.

3 Compost and pots

Use a free-draining mix, such as a cactus compost or ordinary houseplant compost with added grit or perlite. Terracotta pots help because they dry out faster. Snake plants like being slightly pot-bound and need repotting only every few years.

4 Common problems

  • โœ“Soft, mushy leaves at the base: overwatering and rot
  • โœ“Wrinkled, curling leaves: very dry for a long time
  • โœ“Leaves flopping over: too little light, or overwatering
  • โœ“Brown, crispy tips: usually old damage, harmless

5 Propagation

Divide a crowded plant at the roots when repotting, or cut a leaf into sections and stand them upright in moist compost. Leaf cuttings of variegated types usually lose the yellow edge, so division is the better option for those.

This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
