How to Raise Humidity for Houseplants (and Which Methods Do Not Work)

Many popular houseplants come from rainforests where humidity is high all year. Indoors, especially with heating on, humidity can fall low enough to cause crispy leaf edges, curling, and pest problems.
Some common advice helps a lot. Some barely helps at all.
1 Plants that care most

- ✓Ferns, especially maidenhair and Boston ferns
- ✓Alocasias and anthuriums
- ✓Fittonias and many trailing begonias
2 Methods that work
A humidifier is the only way to raise room humidity meaningfully. Grouping plants together creates a slightly moister pocket of air around them. Bathrooms and kitchens with good light are naturally humid spots. A glass cabinet or terrarium gives very high humidity for small, fussy plants.
3 Methods that help a little
Pebble trays — saucers filled with gravel and water, with the pot sitting above the waterline — add a small amount of local humidity. They are worth doing, but do not expect miracles.
4 Methods that barely help
Misting raises humidity for a few minutes before the water evaporates. Done frequently, it can even encourage fungal leaf spots. It is fine if you enjoy it, but it will not fix a dry-air problem.
5 Move plants away from heat
The simplest fix is often to move plants away from radiators, heating vents, and fireplaces. Hot, moving air dries leaves out far faster than the general room air.
