Growing Sweet Peppers in Pots

Quick answer

Peppers need warmth and a long season, but containers on a sunny patio or in a greenhouse suit them well.

Sweet peppers are close relatives of chillies and need similar care, with a bit more patience as larger fruits take time to ripen.

In cooler climates, growing them in pots under cover gives the best results.

1 Starting off

Sow seeds indoors in late winter or early spring, keeping them warm. Alternatively, buy young plants in late spring. Move plants outside only when nights are reliably warm.

2 Pots and position

Use pots of around 5โ€“10 litres with good drainage, and a rich compost. Place in the warmest, sunniest spot you have โ€” a greenhouse, conservatory, or south-facing patio.

3 Care

  • โœ“Water regularly so compost stays moist but not waterlogged
  • โœ“Feed weekly with tomato fertiliser once flowers appear
  • โœ“Support plants with a cane as fruit develops
  • โœ“Pick the first fruit green to encourage more

4 Ripening

Green peppers ripen to red, yellow, or orange over several weeks, becoming sweeter. In cooler areas, some fruit may not colour before autumn; green peppers are still perfectly edible.

This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
