Growing Chillies Indoors: From Seed to Harvest

Quick answer
Chillies love warmth and light, which makes a sunny windowsill a surprisingly good place to grow them.
Chilli plants are compact, attractive, and productive, and many varieties do well in pots indoors. They need a long season, so starting early matters.
With good light, a single plant can produce dozens of pods.
1 Starting from seed
Sow in late winter or early spring in small pots of seed compost, kept warm โ around 20โ25ยฐC helps germination. Some hot varieties can take two to three weeks to sprout. Once seedlings have true leaves, move them to the brightest spot you have, or under a grow light.
2 Potting on
Move plants into progressively larger pots as roots fill them, finishing in pots of around 2โ5 litres depending on the variety. Use a good multipurpose compost and make sure pots drain well.
3 Flowering and fruit
- โFeed weekly with a tomato (high-potash) fertiliser once flowers appear
- โGently brush flowers with a soft paintbrush to help pollination indoors
- โWater when the surface dries, but avoid waterlogging
- โPinch out the growing tip on tall plants to encourage branching
4 Harvesting and overwintering
Pick chillies green or leave them to ripen to full colour for more heat and flavour. Regular picking encourages more fruit. Chillies are perennial: in autumn, prune plants back, keep them cool and slightly dry, and they will often regrow in spring.
This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
