Growing Carrots in Containers

Quick answer
Deep pots and loose compost let you grow straight, sweet carrots without a garden.
Carrots can be tricky in stony or heavy soil but grow well in containers.
Short or round varieties suit pots best.
1 Containers
Use pots at least 30 cm deep for standard carrots, or shallower for round varieties. Fill with sieved compost mixed with sand.
2 Sowing
- โSow thinly on the surface
- โCover lightly with compost
- โKeep moist until seedlings appear
- โThin to a few centimetres apart
3 Carrot fly
Carrot fly larvae tunnel into roots. Raising pots off the ground or covering with fine mesh helps, as the flies fly low.
4 Harvest
Pull carrots when large enough to use, usually 10โ16 weeks after sowing.
5 Watering and feeding
Keep compost evenly moist; dry spells followed by heavy watering cause carrots to split. Carrots do not need rich soil โ too much nitrogen leads to leafy tops and forked roots. Avoid adding fresh manure before sowing. A light liquid feed once or twice during growth is enough in containers.
This is general gardening information. Results depend on your climate, soil, and conditions. Follow label directions for any fertiliser or treatment, and check whether plants are toxic to pets or children before bringing them home.
