Christmas Cactus Care: Getting It to Bloom

Quick answer
Short days and cool nights trigger flowers on Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti.
Christmas cacti (Schlumbergera) are forest cacti from Brazil, not desert cacti. They like more water and less sun than their spiky relatives.
With the right conditions, they bloom reliably each winter.
1 Light and water
Bright, indirect light suits them. Water when the top of the compost is dry, and do not let them sit in water.
2 Triggering flowers
- โGive them long nights โ around 12โ14 hours of darkness for several weeks in autumn
- โKeep them cooler, around 10โ15ยฐC
- โReduce watering slightly
- โAvoid moving once buds form
3 Bud drop
Buds can drop if the plant is moved, gets too dry, or experiences temperature swings.
4 Propagation
Twist off a section of two or three segments, let it dry for a day, then insert into gritty compost.
5 Thanksgiving vs Christmas vs Easter cactus
Several similar plants are sold under these names. Thanksgiving cacti have pointed, claw-like segment edges and flower earlier in autumn. Christmas cacti have rounder segment edges and bloom slightly later. Easter cacti flower in spring and need slightly different care. Care is similar for all, with short days and cool nights triggering flowers.
